Unlike Fallout 3, companions are moved to their target locations instantly. Then they will either return to their original location (except for Raul) or can be told to go to the Lucky 38. If the player already has a companion of a specific type, they need to be dismissed through dialogue.

The player can have one humanoid and one non-humanoid companion (Rex or ED-E) in their party at a time, with both providing their unique companion perks (unless using exploits).

Companions are controlled via the Companion wheel.

Companions are special non-player characters who follow the player, aid them in combat, and provide a unique perk as long as they're in the player's party (whether following them or waiting the perk stops applying when they're dismissed).

I like most of the other companions for various plot reasons, but 80% of the time if I have a choice in companions and I'm not doing a Legion playthrough I've got Cass at my back. Also works great with the All-American and Surplus rounds. Combine that with the Dinner Bell, slug ammunition, and the aforementioned Shotgun Surgeon, and she can shred nearly anything by herself short of the Alpha Deathclaw. It may not seem like much, but an extra 15% damage to Guns-skill weapons in a combat environment based solely on Damage Threshold is very powerful. More than that though is her optional Hand of Vengeance perk, obtained from completing her companion quest.

Right off the bat she starts with Shotgun Surgeon (technically an identical perk just for companions) so shotguns are significantly more powerful in her hands, and stay that way even late in the game.
